Tahoe City is the outdoor recreation hub of the Sierra high country. Summers are ideal for enjoying both Lake Tahoe and the Truckee River outlet. In winter, enormous snowfalls support major snow sports in the mountains around town. Summer resorts began developing along Lake Tahoe’s north shore in the 1870s. But, it wasn’t until the late 1950s that development of nearby ski areas and casinos turned the Tahoe basin into a year-round attraction.
Today, Tahoe City has the best-defined business district on the lake. Recent improvements have enhanced walkways, landscapes and the main street connecting shopping complexes sporting wood-toned “Tahoe style” architecture that blends nicely with the luxuriant pine forest. Downtown attractions include a lakeshore park and beach, river-running put-ins, and the aptly named “Fanny Bridge.” The main road around the lake provides a linear route to a wealth of water-oriented recreation sites, gourmet restaurants and romantic lodgings with spellbinding views.
