North Conway is the peerless gateway to New England’s biggest mountain playground. The Northeast’s highest peak, Mt. Washington, is a perfect backdrop to the village in a broad valley rimmed by leafy green mountains. Settlement began about 200 years ago, but the area’s appeal to visitors began in the 1860s after development of a road and cog railway to the top of Mt. Washington. Four-season status was assured by creation of one of the country’s first ski areas in town in 1938. Unspoiled high country and historic attractions are still here, along with many others now vying for travelers’ attention. Covered bridges, a colorful depot and other evidence of earlier times are as beguiling as ever. There are also plenty of contemporary restaurants and lodgings, along with numerous antique shops, a crafts center, and regional specialty stores. Along the main road into town is a major collection of factory outlet and name-brand stores.
